Applying a fresh coat of paint to your existing cabinets is a great way to fresh up the look in your home. Just be sure that you’re prepared to go through every step of the way in creating a new look for your cabinets.

First, schedule your paint job during summer. You’ll have to open your windows to let paint fumes out and because of humidity paint would dry faster.

You will need the following materials for your cabinet painting project: a set of clean cloths, 2 sets of paint brushes, a gallon of white paint primer, and another gallon of glossy oil-based paint, sandpaper, screwdrivers, lots of old newspapers, and degreasers or paint cleaners.

Start by unscrewing the hinges from your cabinet. Remove everything from cabinet doors, drawers, and every metal attachment. Remove the old paint and varnish by sanding with fine sandpaper. Wipe everything with a damp cloth to make sure no traces of sanding will remain, and let it dry.

Before applying the primer, cover your floor with newspapers to protect it from dripping paint. Paint every inch of wood that you can see and let it dry.  After drying, sand your cabinet very lightly. Make sure that there are no bulging areas where the prime has accumulated. Wipe it with a dry cloth to make sure there are no specks of sanding that have remained.

You can now apply the glossy oil-based paint onto your cabinet. The first application should be light. Allow it to dry a little bit then apply a regular coat making sure that your strokes are even. Allow it to dry for two days.  You now have a glossy finish cabinet.
